Nature'sCool Safety Agreement
Kia ora koutou. This safety agreement exists to help ensure everyone in the Nature'sCool Tribe remains safe. As soon as a parent / caregiver leaves, we assume 'loco parentis' for that child and this constitutes a lot of responsibility for us both morally and legally. The success of our programme, and distinct lack of 'serious issues' over the last six years has been based on a lot of trust and open communication between all parties.  We really do view the Nature'sCool Tribe as our whānau and we will do our absolute best to keep them safe and happy!  There is however, the potential for some serious legal implications for us if things go wrong and so this form acts as a formal agreement which may be referred to in any legal process.

We would appreciate it if you could please go through the information below with your child(ren) before your child attends the programme, and again if it is deemed necessary. If you have any concerns then please let us know via email.

Injury:   When facilitating adventures in the outdoors, there is of course an element of risk which cannot be fully removed (and neither would we want to). Our policy around participant injury centers around the level of medical care required. Basically, if the injury is treatable on-site by one of our team, then we classify that as a "Common Injury'. This is of course still noted and may influence change in process.  If the injury requires external medical care, then we classify this as an "Uncommon Injury" and a more formal investigation will take place as part of our safety system.

Autumn / Winter season:  Please ensure your child has appropriate warm clothing,  (and sufficient spare clothes / towel etc if your child loves the water/ mud).  As the weather is still wet on occasions please also provide a rain jacket for your child if rain is likely. Footwear must accompany your child in case we deem this a necessary safety precaution. Our policy is to emphasize the responsibility of each child to manage their own equipment.  We believe in the careful use of 'real world consequences' as valuable lessons for the tamariki in our care. So although we may offer suggestions as to what we think might be appropriate use of clothing, we will usually only enforce this through limiting their activity options (unless there is a real risk of injury to the child).

Changing / toileting: The Nature'sCool Bus programme often visits locations that do not have immediate access to changing rooms or toilets. Tamariki are reminded of toileting limitations before leaving the van / toileting areas and after that are able to choose between going 'number 1's' either in a discrete location (i.e behind a bush), or escorted to the nearest toilet (always with at least 2 x tamariki present). Number 2's must be taken in the nearest toilet and in cases where no toilet is available, we will take a 'camping toilet and tent' for use. We always carry hand sanitizer made from gentle / natural ingredients. In regards to changing clothing, Kaiako are available to recommend a discrete area and tamariki are advised to let us know when they need to get changed so that we can help facilitate an appropriate area.  At times we may erect tarpaulins etc or use the toilet tent. Please remind your child that they should be discrete with their nudity and that unreasonable public display of their bodies or toileting is not acceptable.

Kai: please provide a full packed lunch to help sustain your child's energy for the entire day. There will be weeks where we will provide kai to cook/ share together as a tribe but please treat this as an extra and continue to provide a full lunch as not all of the children want to participate in eating the kai provided. We ask that you also minimize plastic wrapping where possible, and to avoid sending juice/ soda drinks and lollies etc  A full drink bottle of water is best!

Toys & Tools: Please keep any precious belongings at home as our main priority is to ensure the safety of your child, not their favourite toy.
Knives and fire starters are supplied at appropriate moments so please do not send your child with these or any other potentially hazardous tools.

Travel:  Transport to learning locations will utilize our 12 seater Toyota Hi-ace van. This is a registered passenger service vehicle with full shoulder strap seatbelts throughout. Luke will be driving and has his passenger endorsement (P) license. Tamariki who are legally required to sit in a booster seat must do so.  We have one spare, but appreciate it if parents could supply their own.  As the van does not have designated anchor points in the floor,  rear anchor straps are attached to a strong chain which are then anchored to the seat base.  Tamariki must remain seated with seatbelts fitted correctly for the duration of the journey. Failure to do so may result in the van having to stop. If this behavior continues then we have no option other than to stop and that child would be removed from the programme for the day and a warning issued.

Behavior: The safety of all tamariki and kaiako is our ultimate priority.  Close behind this comes the safety of all other living things (flora & fauna etc). We expect tamariki to treat themselves, others and the natural environment with respect and care. The careful facilitation of child-led conflict resolution continues to be an integral part of Nature'sCool's philosophy and strength. However there are limitations to this and physical or verbal attacks are not acceptable. If needing to 'step in', our strategy for diffusing the situation may include (but is not limited to): redirecting focus onto a different activity,  separating individuals and / or facilitating restorative conversations. In more serious or repetitive circumstances, tamariki may be asked to: 'shadow' or 'hang' with one of the kaiako (meaning they must stay with the kaiako where-ever that kaiako goes) - in this situation the kaiako would ideally provide opportunities for that child to self-regulate before reintegrating into the group, but this may not always be appropriate or successful. If more serious again (or offending behavior continues) then the child may be warned that continuation of the offending behaviour will result in that child's removal from the programme for the remainder of the day. If removal from the programme is required, then a parent / caregiver will need to come and pick them up asap. This situation would then result in an official 'warning' issued via email. If the offending behaviour is repeated then unfortunately that child will be removed from the programme permanently.
