The North Creek Community Visioning Project (NCCVP) is about the history, health, and restoration of North Creek, aka Whákeras Creek or Town Creek. The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) has been gathering a community history of the creek through a series of interviews with elders, social media callouts, and creek walks. The next step is to develop a plan for the future of the creek in collaboration with KEPO, our engineering consultant (Water's Edge), and the community. As part of this step, we invite the community to complete this survey on the future of North Creek to help guide restoration planning.
In addition, KEPO is hosting a community workshop on Wednesday, December 13 at 5:00 pm at the Legion to review potential restoration works, including those that would take place in summer 2024. Community feedback and guidance on developing this plan will be essential for effective restoration.
We cannot restore the creek to exactly what it was before, but we can make meaningful improvements that will benefit community members and our kin in the natural world. This project is one small step towards a future where our creeks are revitalized and flourishing. Join us in rethinking “Whákeras” creek!
