General Information
During our 3 day retreat, participants will learn how to meditate in a peaceful environment in the middle of nature with the guidance of our teaching monks.

The meditation technique that you will learn is called The Middle Way technique, which is a practice for meditators of all levels of experience.

This technique and the overall environment of Pa Pae places a large emphasis on comfort, which, we believe, is the foundation necessary to experience true inner peace.

If you wish to learn how to meditate with this method and even practice before your arrival, you can do so by listening to our instructional audio and guided meditations.

For the first evening and first full day of the retreat, we ask participants to remain silent, allowing your mind time to slow down and become peaceful.

During this period, you may ask questions to the teaching monks, but we ask that you remain silent outside of the sessions.

After the first day and a half is over, you may begin to talk with and get to know your fellow participants.
However, we always ask that you remain mindful with the subject, volume and frequency of your conversations. When you live in a community (especially a spiritual one), it is important to always remain considerate of those around you.

If you wish to remain silent throughout the entire retreat, we provide a "Silent Badge" that you are welcome to wear.

We also have plenty of space for you to spread out and find your own quiet corner.

3-Day Program Schedule
Please do your best to arrive between 2pm-5pm on the arrival day. This will give you enough time to check in and go on the tour of the retreat grounds at 5:30pm.

The following 2 days will consist of 4 sessions per day that incorporate meditation instruction and practice as well as teachings on wisdom.

You will be provided with 2 meals a day (breakfast and lunch) and some light refreshments in the evening time. This type of eating schedule helps support your meditation practice and ability to sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed.

End of the 3 Day Structured Retreat
Arrival at Pa Pae
Between 2pm and 5pm is the best and most convenient time to arrive.
However, we will also be receiving guests between 8AM - 11AM.
  • Please refrain from arriving between 11AM and 1PM as our staff must eat lunch during these hours.
  • If you show up during these times you will have to wait for someone to either pick you up or check you in.
  • Also, if you are unable to make it before 5:30PM, you must find another accommodation for the night and come to our retreat the following day, as our staff will not be available to receive you.
  • Given that it takes about an hour and a half to get to our site from Chiang Mai or Pai, please do not select a van that leaves after 4pm. If you plan to take this form of public transportation, please factor this into your estimated time of arrival.
Thank you for your understanding, as we must take care of our people and make sure they can maintain good health and inner peace while aiding others on their spiritual journey :)

Example:
If your retreat date is 6th-9th July, ideally you should arrive between 2pm-5pm on 6th July. If you arrive during this time, you will have enough time to check-in and join the tour of the retreat grounds at 5:30pm. However, if you cannot make it at this time, (although not ideal) arriving the morning after could also work.

If you arrive late, then it would be best to listen to our instructional audio and guided meditations before arriving so that you are up to speed.

What To Bring
Please be ready to present your passport/visa upon arrival. We will need to check that you are here on a valid visa, we can not accept guests who are here on an expired visa.

When you arrive, we will provide you clothes to be worn during the entirety of your stay:
  • 2 pairs of white pants
  • 2 pairs of white shirts
Why white clothes?
White cloths will help you to be more mindful, as they can get dirty easily.
Also, it helps you to reduce the amount of attention you pay to how you or others around you are dressed since everyone will dress in the same, modest fashion.

Warm clothes
Please note, that since we are in the mountains, it is colder than in the city. In the morning or evening the weather can be a bit cooler, so please bring a light sweater or any other clothes that you would like to stay warm.

Footwear
For footwear, sandals or flip flops would be the most convenient since you will be required to take them off before entering each meditation hall.
However, you may wear any other type of closed shoe if that is more comfortable to you. Please note however, that there will be plenty of walking up and down the hill side on stairs and dirt roads that can be slippery when wet. So please walk with caution.

Bugs
We suggest that you bring your own bug repellent, so that you can protect yourself from mosquitoes as you meditate out in nature.

Technology
If you would like to take a break from your phone, you may bring an alarm clock so that you can keep the time in that way. Please note that we do not have a retreat wide alarm clock or bell, so you must wake yourself up.

Toiletry
Please bring your own personal towel and toiletries. We have limited supply to borrow if needed.

Weather
Note on warm clothing (during the months of October – March) – chances are it will be cold during the night/morning time (sometimes less than 10 degrees Celsius) so it is best to come equipped with the warmest clothes that you have including thermal undershirts, long Johns, scarves, warm socks, etc. to wear especially while sleeping. We can provide you with extra blankets or sleeping bags if needed.

Rooms
We have separate accommodation for men and women. Mostly rooms are shared (double beds) and some single rooms are available. Please do not request for a single room as they are limited and we do not reserve rooms as to give everyone a fair chance. Just depends what is available upon your arrival.
Costs & Donations
In order to cover food, utilities, accommodations, supplies, cleaning and maintenance, the cost per person is 1500 baht for the 3 day retreat.

However, what is most important to us, is that everyone has the opportunity to learn meditation and wisdom. So if this cost is outside of your budget, please just come and contribute whatever you can.

Also, if you are interested to donate a larger amount in order to pay gratitude to the teaching monk or help support the continued growth of the retreat, then we would be very grateful for your generosity.
Opportunity to Stay Longer for Personal Meditation or as a Volunteer
After you have undergone our 3 day retreat program, you may stay with us longer term.  You can decide to extend your stay when you are here. As long as you have proven that you are able to and will continue to live harmoniously with other participants and follow the community guidelines properly, then the following two options will be available to you.
  • The first option would be to stay longer while focusing primarily on your meditation. After the activities stated below, there will not be any official sessions each day, so you will have plenty of time to practice by yourself. You are welcome to join our monks for evening chanting and meditation, but outside of this you will be free to meditate where and when you would like. This option would include the daily suggested donation of 500THB per person.
  • The second option available to you would be to stay with us longer as a volunteer. There are many opportunities to contribute including but not limited to: food prep, gardening, organic farming, cleaning, organizing, landscaping, driving, developing land for various projects, construction, walking alms round with the monks, helping out with future retreat programs, etc. These are just some ideas, but we are certainly open to any other ways in which you can contribute to the community.
We would love for dedicated volunteers who have a passion for any of the previous activities to help us maintain and beautify our retreat while becoming a more integrated part of the community.
If you are willing to volunteer each day for any of these activities, then we can offer you a discount on the suggested daily donation for staying at Pa Pae. If you decide to volunteer, you can speak to the staff or existing volunteers to join the team.

We can talk about more details upon your arrival. If either of these options interest you, then please designate it in the "personal information" section below.
“Returning Van” for Prempracha Transportation
If you would like to get a returning van after the retreat is over, please put this information in front of your name when you are booking your van ticket. This is not necessary to write on our application form, only on the Prempracha website.
