Sartori Workshop at Boston University
Space is limited. Register soon. You will be notified by early May if accepted.

ABOUT

A continuation of the Women and Masks Conference held in 2021-22, we are offering a 3-day in person workshop with the Sartori family, renown for their role in the history of the mask in 20th century theater. Paola Piizzi and daughter Sarah Sartori (https://sites.bu.edu/womenandmasks/sarah-sartori/) will lead a workshop that explores some of the philosophies and techniques that their family has crafted over the past 80 years. The workshop is an introduction to key aspects of their complex approach. The Sartoris teach an annual month-long seminar in Italy, where students complete a refined papier maché mask and a leather version. This abbreviated workshop is an introduction to key aspects of their complex approach. In this short time, participants will not complete a mask. Rather, they will leave with an original mask design sculpted in clay that they have refined during the workshop through guidance with the Sartoris, and where possible, a mold will also be cast in plaster. Participants can choose to finish their project at home, using the traditional papier maché technique which will be demonstrated to create a mask.

TIME COMMITMENT

There are limited spots, so we ask that participants commit to attending all 3 workshop days (see below) and the zoom preparatory meeting. We also ask that they watch the Sartori's talk live or view the recording for background on the family.

Saturday, May 27 approximately 10-1 pm
Sunday, May 28 1-5 pm  (dinner after)
Monday, May 29 10-1

The sequence also includes a required preparatory zoom meeting on May 20 from 10-11:30 EST and a hybrid talk on Friday, May 26 at 4:30 pm EST (can be watched as a recording). There will be some additional open studio hours for people to work.

Clear selection
Supplies participants should obtain and bring these supplies to the workshop. You will need to have the board prepared with clay and your carving started. This will be covered in the pre-workshop meeting.
Approximately 25 lbs of clay ( a smooth, low-fire ceramic clay of any color works well but you won't fire it), clay tools like these, calipers like these, a strong board that is hinged and has a lip OR a strong board and a small heavy-duty easel (example), and rags and plastic sheeting to wrap up project. Optional but helpful: plastic spray bottle and mallet for ceramics like these
