The Knoxville Compost Project
The City of Knoxville's Waste & Resources Management Office appreciates your interest in composting!

The Knoxville Compost Project is a community compost program made possible thanks to partnerships with BattleField Farms, City Possum Farm, Beardsley Community Farm, University of Tennessee's Agriculture Extension Office, Green Heron, Goodwill, Nourish Knoxville, Knox County Community Garden & Growers Alliance, Knoxville Botanical Gardens, and funding provided through the USDA’s Community Compost and Food Waste Reduction Grant.

THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROJECT DEPENDS ON ALL PARTICIPANTS CONTRIBUTING ONLY ACCEPTED COMPOST MATERIALS.

The Knoxville Compost Project follows a community composting model, which operates at a much smaller scale than an industrial composting facility. Limiting the types of accepted food waste ensures they will break down and won't produce nuisance smells that might attract rodents and make management of the compost challenging for the farmers.

In order to participate in this compost drop-off program, please do the following:

1. Visit knoxvilletn.gov/compost to review the accepted compost materials, even if you are a seasoned composter. Every composting system is different and some materials that are compostable in other systems may not be accepted in this program.

2. Take the following quiz to test your knowledge. Upon successfully completing the quiz, you will be granted the combination code to unlock the food scrap bins at the four food scrap drop-off sites.
