The Academy will be under the direction of Lt. Mark Piercy, Sgt. Keith Docwra, Det. Christopher Tinio and P.O. Jonathan Coleman. Additional officers will be assisting within this agency with the Junior Police Academy. Various Law Enforcement Officers from other agencies will also teach/instruct the recruits. Daily instruction, education and participation will take place at various Borough of Oakland facilities, buildings, departments, parks and schools.

Enrollment will be restricted to 50 recruits who will have completed 6th, 7th or 8th grade for the 2023-24 school year. Completed applications will be considered on a first come, first serve basis. Any applicant that has previously attended the Oakland Junior Police Academy will be placed automatically on a waiting list. Any applications received after the first 50 applicants are received will be placed on a waiting list. If any of the first 50 applicants accepted to the academy decide not to participate or payment has not been submitted by the due date, the waiting list will then be used to fill any openings. The waiting list will also function on a first come, first serve basis. Any application that contains false information or is not filled out completely will not be accepted.

Our objective is to educate the recruits about law enforcement, emergency services, and drug awareness. We place strong emphasis on self-respect, respect of others, teamwork and commitment to one’s goals. This will be accomplished through structured events which will be offered in a fun, informative, interactive, educational and hands-on manner.

The curriculum will consist of educational activities related to law enforcement, drug and alcohol avoidance, first aid, C.P.R., military drill, defensive tactics and physical training. The daily programs will include presentations from Oakland Police Officers as well as other Municipal Officers, County, State and Federal Agencies depending on their availability. The program will simulate an atmosphere similar to what an officer had experienced when they went through their police training.

The daily schedule is:

July 19th from 7am - 3pm
July 22th - 25th from 7am - 5pm
July 26th from 7am - 3pm

**We will not be accepting any applications from those who are unable to attend each day of the entire program. This includes absences for vacations or sports. ** Transportation to and from the Academy is the responsibility of the recruit’s parent or guardian. If you are okay with your child walking home, there will be a dismissal waiver to sign. Each participant is asked to bring a bag lunch and healthy snacks for the Academy. Dress for the Academy will be the issued academy uniform and comfortable athletic sneakers, no exceptions. There will be daily exercise performed each day. The Junior Police Academy will culminate in a graduation ceremony on Friday, July 26st 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Each recruit’s family is invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony. We are hopeful that the interaction that will take place between your children and the members of our police department will have a positive effect on all involved. As police officers, we thoroughly enjoy participating in this program and look forward to working with your children.
