Additional Session Details:
The Inclusive Environments and Metrics in Biology Education and Research (iEMBER.org) coordination network will host a collaboration session to provide an opportunity for AERA attendees to form new, interdisciplinary teams interested in conducting research on inclusion in biology education. We welcome individuals from all fields and career stages including but not limited to graduate students, post-docs, professors, administrators, teachers, etc. in education, social science, ethnic studies, women’s and gender studies, STEM, STEM discipline-based education research, instruction, policy, program administration, etc. In this networking session, participants will discuss challenges, ideas, and gaps in current knowledge on inclusion in biology education. Then, they will be invited to form interdisciplinary teams on-site to develop and articulate their ideas for new inclusion-based education research projects. The goal is to provide individuals who may not normally have a chance to work together and are passionate about inclusion, science education, and/or biology an opportunity to brainstorm and collaborate. Groups will be interdisciplinary and involve individuals at many levels of their professional career. Attendees will vote together for the projects that they think have the most potential to lead to important findings on inclusion in biology education research. Selected new interdisciplinary teams will receive an iEMBER Award recognizing their idea, interdisciplinary team, and new research pitch. Recognized teams will be invited to develop their collaboration off-site and submit a brief project proposal for SPARC Collaboration Award travel funding. This funding will support groups coming together to further their project over the next year. iEMBER is a multi-disciplinary national research collaboration network that focuses on expanding understanding of how to create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environments in biology. With the goal of fostering the success of diverse students, iEMBER coordinates the efforts of researchers with interests in inclusion from education, biology, and social science (including anthropology, psychology, and sociology) with perspective and support from policy and program administrators. iEMBER is supported by the National Science Foundation (Award #2010716).
