2023 GIS Day Plan & Agenda

Date and Time: November 15th, 2023, 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Location: SJSU Student Union, SU01 Meeting Room 2B

Hosts:

To celebrate National GIS Day at SJSU, we are hosting a series of exciting events including a specialized housing and GIS panel, and a student poster competition. We welcome students from SJSU and Bay Area colleges to submit posters on topics related to GIS, urban planning, geography, UAV/Drones, wildfire, public policy, computer vision, civil engineering, and computer engineering. Refreshments will be provided, and we have several awards to give out!

Poster Submission Deadline: November 12th, 2023

Poster Competition Awards:

  • 1st Place: $300

  • 2nd Place: $200

  • 3rd Place: $100 each

  • Public Selection Awards: $100 each (three awards)

Agenda:

  • 3:00 PM - 3:10 PM: Opening and Welcome

  • 3:15 PM - 3:55 PM: Housing and GIS Faculty Panel (40 min)

  • 4:00 PM - 4:35 PM: Exhibit and Demo: Drone, GPS, and AR Sandbox (35 min)

    • Interactive project presentations and explanatory videos will be available.

  • 4:35 PM - 4:50 PM: Poster Viewing and Public Voting (15 min)

    • Attendees can interact with Drone & AR Sandbox exhibits, vote for their favorite posters, and enjoy refreshments.

  • 4:50 PM - 5:00 PM: Announcement of Poster Competition Awards (Dr. Ahoura Zandiatashbar)

  • 5:00 PM - 5:40 PM: Winner Presentations

    • 1st Place: 10 min

    • 2nd Place: 10 min

    • 3rd Place: 10 min each

  • 5:40 PM - 5:45 PM: Announcement of Public Selection Awards

  • 5:45 PM - 6:00 PM: Closing Remarks and Socializing

Note:

GIS and Housing Panel:

  1. Laxmi Ramasubramanian, Ph.D, AICP: Dr. Ramasubramanian is a professor of urban planning at San José State University, specializing in GIS for community-based planning. She has been the Chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and served as President of both UCGIS and ACSP. She contributed to the National Geospatial Advisory Committee and authored "GIS and Public Participation."

  2. Dr. Jochen Albrecht, GISP: A professor at Hunter College and The Graduate Center of CUNY, Dr. Albrecht specializes in Computational and Theoretical Geography. He authored "Key Concepts and Techniques in GIS" and co-authored "Essential Methods for Planning Practitioners." Recognized as the GIS Educator of the Year by UCGIS, he has published over 60 articles and serves as the President of GISCI.

  3. Deborah Rojas De Leon, RA: A licensed architect in New York, Rojas De Leon is the founder of Rojas AP. Her focus is on enhancing neighborhoods through architecture and urban planning, collaborating with community organizations. She teaches Graphic Communication in the Urban Planning and Policy master program at Hunter College

  4. Dr. Shishir Mathur: A professor at San Jose State University, Dr. Mathur has served as Associate Dean and Director of the Certificate in Real Estate Development. He is recognized for his extensive work in urban planning, real estate, and various other fields, with over 100 publications and numerous consulting projects. He has received awards for service learning and learning activities assessment, and advised organizations like UN-HABITAT.

  5. Moderator: Jeffrey B. Hare: Jeffrey Hare teaches Land Use and Planning Law at San Jose State University. He's a practicing attorney and mediator with a focus on real estate and land use. Hare has extensive public sector experience, is a licensed real estate broker, and actively involved in various legal and planning associations.
