Transgender Homeless Shelter Survey
Hello! My name is Mae Hodge (they/them) and I work at a private homeless shelter in Michigan.
My goal with this survey is to get a better idea of what kind of a set up homeless shelters should have to make trans individuals feel safe and secure. I am compiling a list of homeless shelters in Michigan that are trans friendly as I received a call from a trans woman who didn't feel safe in a traditional homeless shelter and I didn't know where to refer her. I want to rectify that for the next trans person who calls.
After I review responses, I plan to call homeless shelters in Michigan and ask them questions that trans people would want to know before entering a homeless shelter. After I receive answers from this survey, I will compile a list of questions based on those answers, with special attention to trans people who have experienced homelessness and have stayed in a shelter. If you are trans, please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. I want all other trans people to feel safe in a shelter setting as it can already be scary to be in a shelter. But for a trans person, it can be more intimating and potentially unsafe in a shelter setting that is largely separated into men and women floors/buildings, etc.
My other aim with this survey is to use the answers as a model for how homeless shelters can change to be more trans inclusive and to make it safe for us to use shelters.

*trans stands for transgender
