African Studies (AFST) classes share the historical, economic, and geopolitical forces that continue to shape the trailblazing African continent. The program uniquely addresses colonial legacies, racism, and stereotypes in a decolonized manner. Since 1995, AFST has been independently taught by a single Black professor, who is seeking Quality Money Funding to expand the available course offerings. Because only two courses are offered each year, students have found it extremely difficult to receive a Minor in the program. As a result, UCalgary students have been unable to deepen their understanding of this vital continent. UCalgary's Black community has mobilized and prepared a $300K Quality Money Funding proposal that will go towards expanding the entire program!
If this Proposal Passes the Students Union:
1. The program will grow from 2 to 10 courses, making a minor more achievable for all students.
2. Adequate funds will be reserved for Black History Month programming for the next three years.
3. UCalgary will have the largest AFST program in all of Canada.
4. Additional Black professors will be hired to teach in the AFST program.
5. A course devoted to dismantling anti-black racism in North America will be established.
