Waiting For Beds - Community Survey
Boozhoo! My name is Moira Villiard and I am a local painter, muralist, and community engaged artist. Myself and another artist, Carla Hamilton (collage and mixed media installation artist), are going to be creating an art exhibit and installation that is based around the concept of "waiting for beds". We both have a very personal connection to this phrase and hope to bring our personal and real experiences to the table, and use this exhibit as a form of awareness around the gaps in mental health / health / domestic violence / chemical dependency / youth / other social care in our region of Northern Minnesota - in a way that's never been tried before.

Beyond awareness, though, we hope to leverage our stories and connections, as well as already gathered data in the region, to actually push for action to be taken in the community.

As a starting point, we'd like to start gathering input from the community (Northern MN and possibly other parts of the United States Midwest who may have experience receiving care across state lines or whose address interfered with accessing care) so we can grow the installation and programming that will accompany it.

What town, zip code, OR region are you located / did your wait take place? (so we can get a sense of geography for this project)

The Exhibit Concept:
Across our region, thousands of people hear the phrase "you'll need to wait for a bed" or "we are waiting for a bed to open up" when facing some of the hardest moments of their life. Our exhibit hopes to explore this concept and the experiences that take place during the "wait" by creating artwork and educational materials around the subject, as well as by hosting community events, workshops, resource fairs, and soliciting community feedback for each space this exhibit travels.
Which spaces does your story or your loved one's story of "waiting for beds" relate to?
When you think of the phrase "Waiting for Beds", what comes to mind for you?
Where have you or your loved ones waited? Where did you sleep?
We will be painting these answers on strips of fabric that will hang around the exhibit, and offer space for people in person as well to add their answers on fabric strips. Answers submitted here will remain ANONYMOUS by default.
How long did you or your loved one wait for a bed? How many times have you been told? Please feel free to answer this question however you like, we are simply curious about how long the "wait" is on average.
What has been helpful for your or your loved ones? Are their people or resources that have made a difference?
List all the places that you or your loved one slept while waiting for a bed (i.e. parking garages, on a friend's couch, at an abuser's house, at a hotel, etc.). Feel free to be as specific or non-detailed as you like and you may also list multiple responses.
Additional / Miscellaneous questions
Do you have other commentary on this subject? Responses may be summarized and used for artwork or posters (not guaranteed).
If there was a call to action for this exhibit, what would you like it to be? What should our goal be in hosting this exhibit in different communities and space?
Anything else?
Please leave your email if you would like to receive updates about the exhibit :)
