Green Cambridge Volunteer Agreement
Green Cambridge is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Cambridge, MA. We run the urban agriculture sites, programming in the Alewife Reservation, the Cambridge Wildlife Arts, and the Canopy Crew program, among other events and activities associated with these programs. Your participation in these is much appreciated! Here are general guidelines, though they may not be fully encompassing for all activities.
Please read and acknowledge below by signing, dating, and providing your email address.

As a volunteer, we ask that you follow instructions from Green Cambridge staff and signage. We strive to create a safe space for all members of the public. Strictly prohibited while volunteering with us: weapons; fire or explosives; loud noises; poor behavior; hazardous or prohibited materials or substances; hateful or disrespectful language towards any individuals or groups of people. Green Cambridge staff will ask you to leave the site or activity if the above is not followed.

Individuals working with children in our activities will be asked to have a CORI check at least 48 hrs before participating. All children under 18 must remain in direct supervision of parents or adult delegated by the parent.

Most of our events are outside, interacting with the natural environment. You may get dirty, sweaty, and interact with bugs and animals. Please dress appropriately! This includes closed-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, a hat, and any protective gear specific to the activity like gloves. You are advised to bring your water, and public bathrooms are not guaranteed at our sites.

We are not responsible for lost or stolen property. As a volunteer, you agree to not hold Green Cambridge or the property owners where our events take place responsible for any injury or loss you may incur.

Specific to Hurley Street Neighborhood Farm and Riverside Community Garden:

We have been allowed the use of the space by the property owners to grow plants, collect rainwater, hold scheduled workshops and tours, and other events. Volunteers are allowed at the Farm only during staffed hours or with special permission of Green Cambridge staff. Volunteers must check-in with the coordinator when arriving.

Non-organic fertilizers or pesticides are prohibited. Water from the rain tanks is not potable and should not be used for anything other than watering the plants. Nothing may be planted without the permission of staff.

Like most soil in Cambridge, lead contamination is higher than EPA and Mass DEP guidelines for human contact present on the site. Where possible and appropriate, have attempted to cover existing soil with a combination of landscape fabric, new soil, raised beds, mulch, and gravel following EPA/DEP guidelines. However, we cannot guarantee that all contaminated soil is covered. Public use of the spaces should be restricted to the raised beds and adjacent areas. Volunteers are highly encouraged to wear gloves, wash their hands thoroughly after touching soil, and wash all produce from the Farm. Children, especially those under the age of 6, should not be allowed to dig in any of the soil outside of the raised beds. Further, they should not touch any soil outside of the raised beds or paths between the beds.

Specific to the Alewife Reservation:

The Alewife Reservation is owned and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). Any activity in this area is restricted to what is allowed by DCR.
